Mason vows England will Mount another push for glory

Mason vows England will Mount another push for glory

Mason Mount has vowed England will bounce back from their World Cup heartbreak.

Mount climbed off the bench last night to win the penalty that could have pulled the Three Lions level for a second time against world champions France.

Trailing 2-1, the Chelsea midfielder was bundled over in the box, handing Harry Kane the opportunity to net his second spot-kick of the match.

But England skipper Kane, 29, blasted his 84th-minute effort over the bar as the World Cup quarter-final clash slipped away from Gareth Southgate's men.

And while Mount admits it will be some time before the pain subsides, he is confident the Three Lions will come roaring back when Euro 2024 qualification begins next year.

Posting on Instagram, the 23-year-old ace said: "Waking up today, it still hurts just as much.

"The heart and determination of this team has been nothing short of inspiring. We wanted to go further, but it wasn't to be.

"The support we felt this tournament pushed us more than ever. A special thank you to you all who were with us every step of the way.

"Proud to call this group not only my team-mates, but my brothers.

"We'll go again. There are so many special moments ahead together. We are England."

Echoing Mount's sentiments, Marcus Rashford tweeted: "The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions.

"Each and every one of our team gave everything we had to be ready for what was thrown at us. We got close, but not close enough.

"I'll make a promise that we will come again! Thank you for the unconditional support."

After England fell behind to Aurelien Tchouameni's 17th-minute goal, Kane levelled matters from the spot nine minutes after the break.

Olivier Giroud put France back in front 12 minutes from time, only for the Three Lions to be gifted the opportunity to restore parity once again.

Yet with millions of England fans watching on around the world, Kane was unable to trouble Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris with his penalty.

And after sub Rashford came agonisingly close with a last-gasp free-kick, Southgate's promising side saw their journey in Qatar come to a painful end.
