Howe hails comeback as Newcastle edge Brighton

Eddie Howe heaped praise on his Newcastle players as they scored twice late on to beat Brighton 2-1 in the Premier League Summer Series.

The Magpies have been stepping up their pre-season preparations after drawing 1-1 against Chelsea on Thursday and were able to pick up a win against their domestic rivals.

Elliot Anderson scored a six-minute brace to stun the Seagulls and Howe believed that his side did everything he asked them to do on the night.

He said: "It was a really tough game today, we always know that when we play Brighton.

"I felt defensively we were excellent, it was more in possession that we really struggled.

"We had a couple of players playing out of position and that is always difficult but I was really pleased with the commitment and attitude of the players to deliver what we asked them to do.

"I don't think they had an amazing amount of chances, I thought we were a threat in the game all the way through and delighted to win in the end."

Anderson has been a standout performer for the Tyneside club during the summer and is looking to take his game to the next level during the upcoming campaign.

The former Bristol Rovers loanee found himself in the right positions for both of his goals and struck superbly to beat Bart Verbruggen.

On the 20-year-old, Howe added: "He was running right until the end, he came back as the fittest player in all of our tests and it's no surprise that he is the one who got the winning goal.

"He has always been a goalscorer and creator. He has started to show with his endurance levels and physicality the quality that he has."

Anderson made 23 appearances in the Premier League last season with most of them coming from the bench, but he could be in line for a starting spot in 2023-24.

Reflecting on last night's match, he said: "You always want more and I could have more, I just need to tidy a few things up.

"There were a few goals I set out before coming over to America which was to score more goals."
